Over 1,500 Taliban rebels killed last week: Shinwari

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Afghan security and defense forces spokesman on Monday accused Pakistan of supporting Taliban by raising militias in some provinces of Afghanistan and claimed that Afghan forces killed over 1,500 rebels across the country last week.

Gen. Ajmal OmarShinwari told a press conference here that Afghan security and defense forces conducted 154 operations in 20 provinces of the country last week.

He said that 1,528 insurgents were killed and 801 others wounded while 16 more were arrested during the offensives. Afghan forces were also able to discover and defuse 104 landmines planted by the enemy, he added.

Shinwari assured that recent deployments of Afghan forces in some parts of the country helped thwart militant attacks. These forces switched from defensive to offensive mode against the rebels, he said.

He said that Taliban killed 14 civilians and wounded 29 others in parts of the country during the period. In part of his speech, he said that militia building was the main factor of war in the country.

“Afghanistan neighbors, particularly Pakistan, is building militia on our border in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar, they support Taliban this way,” he said.

Shinwari accused the Taliban of capturing 400 civilians in Spin Boldak district and then killing 100 of them. Taliban also killed a number of civilians in Malistan district of Ghazni province, he said. He said that many public facilities were also destroyed by the Taliban during clashes.

However, the Taliban rejected his claims.
