Nuristan floods: Governor says 113 bodies found

PARON (Pajhwok): Recent flash floods in the Kamdesh district of eastern Nuristan province have left 113 people dead, the governor said on Saturday.

Hafiz Abdul Qayyum told Pajhwok Afghan News the flooding in Mir Desh area also damaged crops on 550 acres of land and a 12-kilometre road

Qayyum said the bodies of 113 people had been found after the floods ravaged the area, ruining a mosque and sweeping away 173 houses.

He added that 10 watermills, 10 shops, crops on 550 acres of land, four pick-up vehicles, two scooters and seven bridges were also destroyed.

Rescue teams had been appointed but assistance could not be delivered yet in flood-hit areas due to damaged roads and security concerns, the governor explained.

“The area is under Taliban’s control and telecom firms aren’t functional there,” Qayyum said, adding they were still trying to assist the victims.

Meanwhile, independent sources told Pajhwok the level of fatalities and destruction caused by the flooding was much higher.
