131 people killed in recent Nuristan floods: Governor

PARON (Pajhwok): The governor of eastern Nuristan province has said that aid distribution process to flood affected people in Kamdish district of the province has been launched.

Last week, flash floods in Mirdish area of Kamdish district killed and injured many people and destroyed huge areas.

Nuristan governor Hafiz Abdul Qayum told Pajhwok Afghan News that 131 bodies had so far been discovered while some others were still missing.

He said the floods also destroyed a mosque, 173 houses, 12 kilometres of road, 500 acres of land, 10 shops, a large bridge, some vehicles and a number of small bridges.

“After hard efforts, we were able to transfer aid to Kamdish district,” he said.

The governor earlier had said that they were unable to move relief items to the flood affected people to Kamdish district due to security and other reasons.

The relief items include tents, cooking tools, blankets, cooking oil, pulses, sugar, bean, salt, biscuit and some other essential materials, he said.

“The distribution process is ongoing, the assistance would be distributed by the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) teams,” he added.

The governor said that President Ashraf Ghani also contacted him on telephone and assured him of any assistance for the flood affected families.

This comes as some other local sources told Pajhwok that the casualties and level of destructions were much higher.
