3 civilians killed, 22 injured as Kandahar fighting continues

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): As fighting continued in southern Kandahar province on Thursday, three civilians were killed and 22 others injured during the past 24 hours, sources said.

Dr. Mohammad Daud Farhad, director of Mirwais Regional Hospital in Kandahar, told Pajhwok Afghan News that three bodies and 22 injured people had been delivered to the hospital due to the ongoing fighting in Kandahar city and other areas.

The dead and wounded were brought from 6th, 7th police district, Sarpoza, Mirbazar, Karz, Sanjari and Haji Arab areas of Kandahar city and from Arghandab and Spin Boldak districts.

He said the dead included two civilians and one unidentified person and the injured included four children, five women and the rest were men.

He said 10 people had received bullet injuries, nine shrapnel injuries from artillery fire and three were injured in a landmine blast.

A day earlier, 21 people suffered casualties. Three people were killed and 18 others injured.

As the clashes continued, US and Afghan forces also conducted airstrikes in various parts of Kandahar city.

A source said a fierce gun battle took place between intelligence forces and Taliban in the 15th police district in Nasaran village.

During the operation, US forces conducted airstrikes, killing 15 Taliban fighters.

Also, operations were carried out in Mirwais Mana and Mir Bazaar areas of the city’s 7th security district, in which Nasim Zarqawi, the Taliban’s deputy governor for Kandahar, was wounded, according to sources.

The airstrikes were also carried out in the Khalqi Pol area between Kandahar City’s 15th police district and Dand district when militants attacked a security checkpoint. Three militants were reported killed in the attack.

A spokesman for the Atal Military Corps in Kandahar, Major Sadiq Issa, told Pajhwok Afghan News that security and defense forces, backed by the air force, targeted insurgents in the 7th police district and Dand district.

As a result of the operation, 16 militants were killed and 10 others were injured, he said. But the Taliban denied their fighters had suffered any casualties.
