‘Hopeful decision’ likely as Abdullah returns from Doha

KABUL (Pajhwok): High Council for National Reconciliation chairman Abdullah Abdullah has arrived in Kabul from Doha for ‘special consultations’ and a good progress could be made in the peace process, a reliable source in Qatar said.

Abdullah arrived in Doha three days ago to attend the expanded Troika summit, where he handed over a draft peace plan to the Qatari government.

A reliable source in Qatar, who did not want to be named, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Dr. Abdullah and a government delegation in Doha had not been able to reach an agreement with the Taliban in the past three days on ceasefire or other agreement.

Without elaborating, the source added that Dr. Abdullah was summoned to Kabul for special consultations and “a hopeful decision” was expected to be taken.

The Presidential Palace has not yet commented on the matter, but Faridoon Khwazoon, a spokesman for the National Reconciliation Council, said Dr. Abdullah had arrived in Kabul for consultations, but it was not clear if he would return to Qatar.

Peace talks between the government and the Taliban in Doha began in the presence of the international community last year, but have so far yielded no tangible results.

The Taliban have recently stepped up attacks on cities and have now captured the capitals of 16 provinces, including the major cities of Kandahar and Herat.
