KABUL (Pajhwok): Two military bases in southern Spain can be used to receive Afghans who have worked for the US, the government in Madrid said on Sunday.
In a telephone conversation late on Saturday night, US President Joe Biden and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez agreed on the use of the two military bases.
Citing a statement from the Spanish government, several Spanish media outlets reported the two sides agreed Moron de la Frontera near Seville and Rota near Cadiz could be used to host Afghan refugees until their travel to other countries was arranged.
“Sanchez and Biden agreed the use of the bases of Moron and Rota to host Afghans who worked with the US while in transit to other countries,” the statement added.
“We addressed several topics of common interest, particularly the situation in Afghanistan and the collaboration between our governments in the evacuation of citizens from that country,” Sanchez tweeted.
Meanwhile, the White House said Biden and Sánchez spoke about the latest developments in Afghanistan and the evacuation of their citizens and the Afghans who supported the work of the EU mission
Biden commended Spain’s leadership in rallying international support for Afghan women and girls. He also President Sánchez for Spain’s assistance in temporarily housing the Afghans at bases in Rota and Moron.
