‘Discussions on-going to re-open banks’

KABUL (Pajhwok): Despite the Taliban promise of re-opening banks and money markets in the country today (Wednesday), most banks and other relevant organs remained closed while the Banks Union said discussions to re-open banks was underway.

After the takeover of capital Kabul and other provinces by the Taliban, most government institutions, financial organs including banks halt their operation and closed its gates due uncertainty.

After the closure of banks nationwide, most residents have registered their complaints and said the Taliban pledged re-opening of the bans on Wednesday but still they were unable to get their money from the banks.

Haris Saeedi, one of the Aziz Bank clients, said people are faced with massive economic problems and they could not debate their cash from the banks.

He said he has deposited $6000 in his Azizi Bank account but due to the closure of banks he could not take his money.

Azizi Bank official on the condition of anonymity said only ATM of Azizi bank were made active on Wednesday.

It was expected that all branches of the bank would be opened today but only ATMs were made functional and customers could debate up to 10,000afs or $200.

One of the Kabul Bank employee also told Pajhwok Afghan News that the bank was opened at 1:30pm and remained opened late in the day.

The source said consumers could not get more than 30,000 afs or $500.

A member of the Afghanistan Banks Union on the condition of anonymity told Pajhwok Afghan News that their leadership talked to the newly appointed acting head of the Da Afghanistan Bank and discussed issues faced by bankers.

The source said after the resolution of these problems banks will start functioning.
