PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan and with Russia have agreed to work together to bring peace to Afghanistan and combat terrorist threats to the region.
In a phone conversation on Wednesday, Prime Minister Imran Khan and President Vladimir Putin underlined a coordinated approach to tackle the evolving situation in Afghanistan.
In a statement from his office, Khan said his country attached “high importance” to the role of the Troika Plus in dealing with the crisis in Afghanistan.
The Extended Troika on Peaceful Settlement in Afghanistan — involving Pakistan, Russia, the United States and China — has held multiple meetings this year.
During the call from Putin, the two sides exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan and bilateral relations, said a statement from Khan’s office.
A stable, secure and peaceful Afghanistan was very important for Pakistan and regional stability, the premier noted.
An inclusive political settlement was the “best way forward” in Afghanistan, along with ensuring the safety, security and protection of the rights of Afghans, he believed.
He urged the global fraternity to stay positively engaged in support of the Afghan people to help address humanitarian needs and ensure economic sustenance.
Khan and Putin agreed to closely cooperate within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation framework on promoting regional peace and security.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin said the two leaders expressed their readiness to step up efforts to combat threats of terrorism and drug trafficking emanating from Afghanistan.
