PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Afghanistan’s female footballers, who claimed receiving threats from the Taliban, have arrived in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa capital along with their families.
Members of Afghanistan’s junior football team crossed into Pakistan via Torkham on Tuesday night after the government issued them emergency humanitarian visas.
Officials said the female players would travel from Peshawar to the eastern city of Lahore, where they would be housed at the Pakistan Football Federal (PFF) headquarters.
Originally scheduled to travel to Qatar, where Afghan refugees have been housed at a facility for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the girls were left stranded after a bomb blast at the Kabul airport on Aug 26.
Most members of the Afghanistan women team flew out of the country in the last week of August after an arrangement with the Australian government, the junior players were unable to get flights because they did not have passports and other documents.
The relocation of the 32 footballers and 83 of their family members to Pakistan was initiated by British-based NGO Football for Peace in cooperation with the government and PFF.
