Gold, fuel, flour, sugar prices up in Kabul

KABUL (Pajhwok): The prices of car fuel, some food items and gold have increased during the outgoing week in capital Kabul, market sources said Saturday.

Traders say that the reason behind increased petrol and diesel prices was due to limited banking services that restricted people and companies to withdraw adequate amount of money from their accounts for running businesses after the fall of republic government.

They say the low imports and high demand is the reason of high fuel prices.

Petrol and diesel prices increased by nearly six percent this week.

A worker at Hashemi Fuel Station in Taimani area of Kabul city, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the price of one liter of petrol increased from 65 Afghanis to 68 Afghanis and the same quantity of diesel from 52 Afghanis to 55 Afghanis this week.

Mohammad Sharif, a gas seller in Kulula Pushta area of Kabul said that the price of a kilogram of the commodity was increased from 70afs to 75afs.

The prices of some food items jumped by more than 19 percent this week.

Zamarai Safi, head of Food Traders Union in Kabul said that the price of a bag of 49 kilograms of Kazakhstani flour increased from 1,900afs to 2,300afs, a bag of 49 kilograms of Indian sugar from 2,200afs to 2,850afs and a tin of 16 liters of Khurshid ghee from 2,150afs to 2,300afs.

He said that the prices of these items increased due to low imports.

However, he said that the price of a bag of 24kg of Pakistani rice stayed at 2,400afs, a kilogram of Indonesian green tea 350afs and the same quantity of African black tea 380afs.

Hamed Sofizada, a retailer in Dahan-i-Bagh market, said a 49-kg bag of Kazakhstani flour cost 2,150afs, a 49-kg sack of Indian sugar 2,670afs and a 24-kg bag of Pakistani rice 2,500afs.

Similarly, a 16-litre tin of Malaysian cooking oil cost 2,250afs, a kilogram of Indonesian green tea 360afs and the same quantity of African black tea 390afs.

Gold prices also increased.

Mohammad Javid, a jeweler in Lycee Maryam area in Kabul city, said that the price of one gram of Arabian gold increased from 3,800afs to 3,900afs and the same quantity of Russian variety from 3,050afs to 3,150afs.

Haji Hussain, owner of Sadaqat Money Exchange Service in Sara-i-Shahzada Market in Kabul said that one US dollar accounted for 88afs and 1,000 Pakistani rupees 503afs, compared to last week’s rates of 86afs and 503afs respectively.
