Work on healthcare center kicks off in Kandahar

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Construction work was launched on Thursday on a healthcare center in the capital of southern Kandahar province, local officials said.

The hospital is funded by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Kandahar public health director, Hafiz Abdulhai Abbas, provincial economy director, Gul Ahmad and UNHCR representative Haji Timor Shah as well as local influential figures were present at the work launch ceremony of the hospital.

Public health director, Hafiz Abdulhai Abbas told Pajhwok Afghan News that the healthcare center was being built based on the request of local people.

He said that the facility in the ninth police district of Kandahar city, provincial capital, was being built in a populated area where it was needed.

Abbas thanked UNHCR for funding the hospital.

UNHCR representative, Haji Timor Shah said that the facility would be built in 1.5 acres of land on a cost of $200,000 over a period of six months.

Construction process of the facility would be implemented by ACC construction company and it would be supervised by WAW organization, he said.

A local resident, Haji Abdul Ahad was happy over the construction of the hospital and said that thousands of displaced people from Kandahar, Helmand, Uruzgan and other provinces were living in the area and they faced problems in access to health services.

He asked the government and aid organizations to also provide other essential social services to the local people.
