6bn afs revenue collected in nearly 2 months: MoF

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has announced collecting more than six billion afghanis in customs revenue over the past less than two months.

The ministry also pointed to a 63 percent reduction in customs duty on basic food items.

Customs duty on a tonne of flour has been cut from 3,095 afghanis to 1,000afs, down by 67.7 percent, according to a statement from MoF.

Similarly, the duty on a tonne of sugar used to be 5,858afs, but now it has come down to 2,012afs, indicating a fall of 65.8 percent.

Previously, the customs duty on one tonne of sugar stood at 3,483fs. However, the figure has now declined to 1,548afs, showing a cut of 55.6 percent.

In addition to foodstuff, medicines are among Afghanistan’s major imports. In the past, it had 20,000 codes that paved the way for corruption.

Under the new policy, a single code has been developed for medicines, making imports easier and preventing smuggling.

In September, 1.07 billion afs were collected in revenue across the country. However, the figure jumped to 4.6 billion afs in October — up by 3.5 billion afs.

The Ministry of Finance affirmed its commitment to ensuring the quality and imports of basic foodstuffs, fuels and medicines this winter.
