Uruzgan hospitals closed due to lack of doctors, medicines

TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Residents of Dehrawud and Khas Uruzgan districts  of central Uruzgan province say there are  hospitals in their districts, but their doors are closed to patients due to lack of doctors and medicines.

They added that the situation has forced them to take their patients to Tirinkot, the provincial capital, for treatment.

Mohammad Naeem, a resident of Bazaar area of ​​Khas Uruzgan district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that there were several other health centers besides the district hospital but none of them were functioning.

He added that when patients visit these hospitals, they are told that there are no doctors and medicines are not available.

According to him, these problems have made people suffer and have to take their regular patients to Tirinkot or other areas for treatment.

Shafiullah, another resident of the same district, said that when he had a serious illness at home, he was forced to take it to Tirinkot for treatment.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News patients often breathed their last on the way to the provincial hospital and were taken back to their homes. He says people have been suffering from this problem for months but so far no action has been taken to solve it.

Samiullah, a nurse at the Khas Uruzgan district hospital who works at the blood bank, told Pajhwok Afghan News that over the past few months, not only has there been a shortage of medicines, but many doctors have also quit their jobs. .

He added that the district hospital used to have obstetrics, gynecology, OPD, examination, vaccination and many other departments and services but now all had come to a standstill.

He added that the uncertain fate of the salaries of doctors and other staff forced them to quit their jobs and eventually the hospital faced this situation.

Rashid, the district governor of Khas Uruzgan, acknowledged that health services in the district had stopped in recent months and that people were facing serious problems.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News he visited the hospital from time to time and instructed the available doctors to serve the people well.

He added that he had shared the problems of the district hospital and other health centers with the central authorities and asked them to take serious steps to resolve them.

Besides Khas Uruzgan, residents of Dehrawud district also complain about the lack of health facilities in their areas and say that there are health centers but they do not provide services.

Mohammad Ghani, a resident of the district, told Pajhwok Afghan News there were hospitals in his district but no doctors or medicine.

He said the situation had left people in a precarious situation and called on the authorities to reopen health centers and hospitals.

Officials of MOVE, a financial and technical support organization to the Uruzgan Public Health Department, reaffirm that health services will soon be available in all hospitals and health centers in the province.

Dr. Nematullah, head of the department’s information department, told Pajhwok Afghan News that monitoring of all health facilities in the province had begun and efforts were being made to resolve all issues.

He said that he would soon send the required medicines and health workers to all the health centers to provide health services to the locals.

It is noteworthy that doctors and health workers have repeatedly complained that they have not received their salaries for several months and are facing an uncertain fate.
