Kunduz farmers say can’t afford to buy fertilizers

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): The price of chemical fertilizers in northern Kunduz province has risen by up to 90 cent this year compared to previous years, a number of farmers said on Sunday.

The farmers complain that they cannot afford to buy fertilizer and as a result some of their land remained uncultivated.

One of them, Ahmad Khan, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the price of chemical fertilizers in the province had risen sharply this year.

“The price of chemical fertilizers has gone up so much that we can’t afford it. Most of our land is left uncultivated,” he said.

Another farmer, Mohammad Sharif, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the price of a bag of fertilizer had increased from 2000 afghanis to 4000 afghanis.

“The price of chemical fertilizers has gone up due to recent developments in the country and the closure of banks,” he said.

A number of other farmers also expressed similar views and called on government officials to take serious steps to address the problem.

Maulvi Amanullah Hassan, director of Kunduz agriculture department, told Pajhwok Afghan News the price of chemical fertilizers had recently gone up.

“Prices have gone up a bit but we are trying to control it,” he said.

Maulvi Hassan said a number of organizations had started a survey of farmers to distribute improved seeds and chemical fertilizers to deserving farmers.

In addition to chemical fertilizers, food and other commodity prices have risen across the country, raising concerns among people.
