Heavy snowfall shuts Salang Pass for traffic

CHARIKAR (Pajhwok): The Salang Pass, connecting Kabul with the northern provinces, has been blocked by snowstorms for all kinds of traffic, officials said on Monday.

Officials of Salang Maintenance and Protection Authority say the snow was still falling heavily in southern and northern parts of Salang.

The snowfall would continue for another 24 hours, the Met Office says.

Sami Walizada, executive director of the authority, urged drivers to strictly abide by traffic rules while driving down the road.

The highway, which receives heavy snow in the winter, runs through the Hindu Kush mountains through a 2.7-kilometre-long tunnel between Parwan and Baghlan provinces.

In February 2010, 170 people were killed and 125 others injured after being caught in snowstorms while crossing the pass.
