Hundreds involved in disability fraud identified in Paktia

GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Hundreds of healthy people, who received salary and privileges in the name of disabled persons, have been identified in southeastern Paktia province, an official said on Saturday.

Paktia martyrs and disabled affairs director Mohammad Nabi told Pajhwok Afghan News that they had started scrutiny of all those who received salary and privileges in the name of disabled and heirs of martyrs to prevent corruption.

He said they had so far identified 1500 imaginary disabled persons out of 10000 registered disabled and heirs of martyrs in the province.

He said the process to identify ghost persons was underway to determine how many ghost disabled people received salary and privileges.  He said the aim of the scrutiny was to bring about transparency and give rights to deserving people.

Nabi said as part of the scrutiny families of security personnel killed or wounded during the past regime would also be registered.

Relatives of martyrs and people with disabilities say they are happy with the scrutiny as many people who did not deserve received salary and privileges in the name of disabled and heirs of martyrs.

Mohammad Naeem, a resident of Zurmat district who lost one of his legs in the previous conflict, said: “It is very good to tell apart from deserving and undeserving people. Many healthy people have been receiving stipend and privileges in our name.”

He said previously the department of martyrs and disables was plagued with numerous problems and urged the new government to bring order and help deserving people. Naeem said he had not received his privileges over the past two years.

Besides Paktia, many healthy people have been receiving salary in the name of disabled people in other provinces.
