ZARANJ (Pajhwok): About 700 drug addicts have been rounded up from the streets of the capital of northwestern Nimroz province for rehabilitation.

Police chief Sardar Mohammad Ayubi told Pajhwok Afghan News the addicts had been evacuated to a former prison building for rehabilitation.

Ayubi asked well-off traders of the province for cooperation, saying the process of collecting addicts was underway.

Meanwhile, a number of Zaranj residents expressed happiness with the drive launched by the police headquarters.

Khalil Mohammadi, an inhabitant of Zaranj, hailed the process of collecting drug addicts from the streets as a positive step.

Suhrab, another resident, urged the public health officials to ensure the rehabilitation of the addicts on humanitarian grounds.

Mohammad, one of the addicts, told Pajhwok: “We are very happy that the Islamic Emirate collected us for treatment.”

Fawad, another addict, said: “I have been taking drugs for several years. Today, we were brought here for medical treatment. We are very happy that they have picked us from the streets.”
