Respect human rights if want recognition, Amiri tells Taliban

KABUL (Pajhwok): US Special Envoy for Afghan Women, Girls, and Human Rights Rina Amiri asked the Taliban to respect human rights if they want to be recognized by the international community.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said it had sought information from the Interior Ministry on reports of the arrest of two other female activists in Kabul yesterday.

UNAMA said the United Nations was once again demanding the release of all “missing” female activists and their friends.

According to VOA, Amiri, the US special envoy for Afghan women, wrote on her Twitter account today in response to UNAMA’s concerns: “These unjust detentions must be stopped. If the Taliban want legitimacy from the Afghan people and the world, they must respect human rights of Afghans, especially of women and freedom of expression.”

She added that the Taliban should release the women activists and their relatives as soon as possible.

The government has not yet commented on reports of missing women activists in Kabul.

Earlier, two other women activists, Tamana Zaryab Paryani and Parwana Ibrahimkhel, denied reports about their forced disappearance.
