Cost, production of oxygen up as Covid-19 cases surge

KABUL (Pajhwok): Production and sale of oxygen have increased following a surge in positive Covid-19 cases in the country.

Najibullah Sediqi, head of the oxygen producing factory in Kabul, told Pajhwok oxygen sales had increased recently once again.

He said the Covid-19 hospital (Afghan-Japan) previously purchased 70 balloons of oxygen but currently it bought nearly 100 balloons.

“Previously, two to three retail purchasers approached us but currently more than 20 come and purchase oxygen,” he said.

He said when electricity was available, they sold 42 liters of oxygen for 400afs and currently as they used generator so they sold the same quantity of oxygen for 500afs.

“I have never taken money for 10 liters of oxygen neither in the past or now because I want to help my countrymen,” he added.

Agha Sahib, a retail purchaser of oxygen in Qwa-i-Markaz area, said he sold two to three balloons of oxygen daily.

He said during the outbreak of Covid-19 the cost of 15 liters of oxygen had been 14,000afs but the price reduced to 7,000afs currently.

Meanwhile, Javed Hajir, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health, told Pajhwok they were fully prepared for the new variant of Covid-19. He said all the oxygen networks were active in all state hospitals.

He did not confirm nor refused the presence of Omicron in the country, saying he had no information about it.

He said the government had provided license to a number of privet oxygen producing plants and they were active currently.
