KABUL (Pajhwok): The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has called on all parties to the conflict in Ukraine to adhere to the rules of war and the safety of civilians.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday ordered a military operation in the Donbass region of Ukraine. The attack began yesterday and is still ongoing. There were also casualties during the war.

Peter Maurer, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), said in a statement to Pajhwok that he was worried about the safety of the people of Ukraine were.

He said that ICRC stood by the people of Ukraine and that aid groups were working to help those in need.

He called on all parties to the conflict to respect the principles of war, to protect civilians and prisoners, and to spare institutions involved in the affairs of homes, schools and medical facilities.

According to him, impartial and independent humanitarian action must be safe so that the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement can provide vital services to civilians.

He said all states must work to prevent a war that is taking a heavy toll on civilians.
