West, Karzai talk return of Afghan girls to school

KABUL (Pajhwok): US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West and former president Hamid Karzai have discussed the return of Afghan girls to school.

West tweeted that he met Hamid Karzai on Sunday and exchanged with him views on the closure of girls’ schools across the country.

He wrote: “The Afghan people’s desire to see girls return to secondary school soonest, and the need for a national consultative process to determine Afghanistan’s future.”

Last week marked the start of the new academic year in cold areas of Afghanistan. But the government postponed the reopening of girls’ schools.

The authorities say secondary schools for girls would be reopened once a plan for arranging separate classes for girls and boys is drawn up.
