Maidan Wardak needs 1144 more teachers: Education director

MAIDAN SHAHR (Pajhwok): There has been a shortage of professional teachers in central Maidan Wardak province, where most of schools lack buildings, an official said on Tuesday.

Maulvi Mohammad Gul Muttaqi, director of education, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “There are 427 schools in our province, of which only 263 have buildings. We have 4971 teachers but we need 1144 more.”

He claimed to have shared the problem with the education ministry, but the problem remained unaddressed. He said if new teachers were not hired, many school might be closed.

Bakht Noor, principal of Khalid Bin Waleed High School in Syedabad district, told Pajhwok Afghan News they lacked textbooks and stationery. “We often use coal instead of chalk,” he added.

Sayed Akbar Khan, headmaster of Shahid Asadullah Primary School in the district, said their school did not have a building and students are taught in tents.

Yahya, a teacher at Bibi Khadija Girls’ Primary School in Chak district, said she taught six classes because there were few teachers.

There are a total of 427 schools in Maidan Wardak, of which 137 are high schools, 186 are middle and 104 are primary schools.
