7 years on, Rahim Gul unable to save dowry amount

ZARANJ (Pajhwok): Rahim Gul, 30, a resident of southwestern Nimroz province, has not been able to save money for his wedding from the past seven years and his suffering continues.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News that on his engagement day his father-in-law fixed the dowry amount at 500,000 afs and he has been able to pay only 200,000 in the past seven years.

“I don’t know for how many more years I have to work to complete the dowry amount and hand it over to my father-in-law and bring my bride home,” he questioned.

He said he worked for several years as driver at a private school against 8,000 afs but he had to leave that job because it could not addressed his economic woes.

“I bought a Zaranj Motorcycle to earn money but things went worse when I lost my parents.”

He said he worked hard in heat and cold on his Zaranj Vehicle to support his family and save money for his wedding.

He managed to earn 200 to 300 afs daily or 9,000afs monthly. He said he has two more brothers, one of them is driving Zaranj like him and another is Hafiz-i-Quran.

Rahim Gul said he often visited his father-in-law to ask him to reduce the dowry amount but he did not succeed in convincing him.

He said parents should pay attention to the future of their children and should not ask for higher dowry amounts from grooms that were unaffordable for them.
