122 journalists subjected to violence, 6 killed last year

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Afghan Independent Journalists Association (AIJA) says about 122 journalists were subjected to violence and 287 media outlets closed due to financial crisis last year.

May 3 (Journalists Day) was marked by the AIJA in Kabul on Monday.

Farhad Bahroz, deputy director of AIJA, said 122 journalists were subjected to violence last year and 297 media outlets were closed as a result of financial crisis.

He said six journalists, including three women, were killed and six others wounded during the period.

According to him, about 6,000 journalists and media workers have lost their jobs and hundreds of others fled the country.

He said the AIJA was striving to support journalists directly through international institutions.

Mohammadi Yaar Majroh, a representative of AIJA in Kandahar, suggested the government prepare a guide giving journalists a clear idea as to what was publishable and what was not.

He also called on the government to help resolve the financial problems being faced by media organisations.
