Circulation of old banknotes worries Farah residents

FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): Some residents of western Farah province say with the arrival of seasonal agricultural products, old afghani banknotes have surged.

They complain the increase in old banknotes has created difficulties for the people in purchasing and selling different commodities.

Abdullah Alizai, the economic expert, told Pajhwok Afghan News the reason behind the increase of old banknotes was the production of spring agricultural products such as cucumber, tomatoes, Okra, eggplant and other green vegetables because traders from other provinces purchase the products with old money.

He said another reason was that some people saved new banknotes and make transactions in old ones, making transactions difficult.

Hamidullah, hailing from Farah City, told Pajhwok old banknotes; circulation had created problems.

“Shopkeepers don’t accept the old banknotes when we purchase groceries,” he explained.

He urged the government to collect the old currency notes from the market and distribute new ones.

Abdul Jabbar Matin, another resident, also called the circulation of old notes a huge problem. He asked the government to address the issue.

Maulvi Abdul Hai, director of information, acknowledged the spike in old banknotes and said the authorities concerned were working to sort out the problem.

Pajhwok tried to contact the Da Afghanistan Bank officials for comment, However, DAB officials did not respond despite frequent requests.
