SCA closes midwife training centre in Wardak

MAIDAN SHAHAR (Pajhwok): The Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA) will shut its midwife training centre in central Maidan Wardak province for a short time.

SCA Director Dr. Pardes made the announcement at a certificate distribution ceremony in Maidan Shahr, the provincial capital.

Twenty-five new midwives completed their training in the ninth batch graduation at the training centre.

“We don’t have the capacity to attract 70 percent of midwives who have already completed training in the health sector. Midwives have worked hard for two years to serve the people.”

Public Health Director Dr. Mohammad Zark Zeerak said they had 206 midwives, including the new graduates, serving at 77 health centres across the province.

He called midwives servants of society, hoping they would discharge their duties honestly.

Roshanak Wardak, chief gynecologist, expressed her concern over the closure of the training centre.

Wardak urged the government to ensure that such training centres remained functional.

Mursal, one of those who completed the training course, said: “We can take care of mothers and babies with full confidence.”
