Govt urged to stop Daikundi addicts from stealing

NEILI (Pajhwok): The residents of Nelli, the capital of central Daikundi province, complained against the growing incidents of robbery and stealing by drug addicts and urged the local administration to address the issue.

Haji Khair Mohammad, a resident of Daikundi, said his fire woods, three water pumps and clothes had been stolen by drug addicts.

He urged the local authorities in the province to avoid robbery by the drug addicts and gave them severe punishment.

Sayed Jawad, a shopkeeper in Neili city, whose shoes had been stolen by a drug addict, said an increase in such robberies was the unknown fate of drug addicts and the lack of rehabilitation centers.

Ali Pakbeen, a lecturer at the Daikundi university, said five years after the addicts might enter people’s houses by force if continued like this.

Maulvi Mohammad Hashim Nizam, counter-narcotics head, said: “It is true that drug addicts do steal due to economic problems and starvation but intelligence and anti-narcotics forces have a strong presence so when the arrest any addict send it to jail.”

Nizam added that efforts were underway to activate a 20-bed rehabilitation center as soon as possible.

However, he expressed concern about the lack of funds to collect the drug addicts.
