1,036 killed, 2,949 injured in last week’s quake: WHO

KABUL (Pajhwok): The World Health Organization (WHO) says at least 1,036 people have been killed, 2,949 more wounded in last week’s earthquake in Afghanistan.

WHO published this causality report based on information from Afghanistan’s Public Health Ministry. But the ministry itself has so far said nothing in this regard.

Earlier, the number of deaths was put at more than 1,000 the injuries at around 1,500.

On June 22, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Afghanistan. Paktika and Khost provinces, especially remote areas like Giyan, Barmal, Zherok and Spera districts, were the worst-hit.

In addition, a 4.2 magnitude aftershock hit the Giyan district of Paktika on June 24.

The report, citing MoPH figures, said a total of 1,036 people were killed and 2,949 injured. About 4,500 homes were damaged in Paktika and Khost.

According to the report, 1,000 people were killed and 1,600 injured in Giyan and Marmal Zerhok districts of Paktika, while 36 individuals were killed and 1,349 others injured in the Spera district of Khost.

The report added 4,500 houses in Paktika and Khost provinces were destroyed as a result of the temblor.

Pajhwok shared the WHO report with MoPH, but the ministry is yet to come up with a formal response.
