Grand ulema gathering to commence on Wednesday

KABUL (Pajhwok): Thousands of religious scholars and tribal elders have been invited to attend a three-day gathering commencing at the Loya Jirga tent on Wednesday.

A reliable government source told Pajhwok Afghan News the gathering was being organized at the request of religious scholars and tribal elders would also attend it.

The source said three religious scholars and tribal elders from each district of all provinces had been invited to the meeting, with the total number reaching 3,000.

The source said no agenda has been set for the meeting but the participants will present their advice and suggestions to the officials of the “Islamic Emirate” on some important issues of the country.

When asked if the supreme leader of the Islamic Emirate, Maulvi Hibatullah Akhundzada, will attend the meeting or not, the source did not confirm or deny his participation.

The proceedings of the meeting would be broadcast live on national radio but video coverage would not be allowed, the source said.

On the other hand, Bilal Karimi, Deputy Spokesman of the caretaker government, in a message to the media said: “Many scholars of the country have requested a meeting from the leadership of the Islamic Emirate. A large gathering of scholars will be held in Kabul. ”

He said the gathering was based on the wishes and aspirations of the people, so it would be attended by a large number of religious scholars and tribal elders from all provinces and districts of the country.

Yesterday, the Kabul Polytechnic University said in a statement that the university will be closed for a week for the “Loya Jirga” session.

In a letter signed by Prime Minister Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, which was published on social media, stated that a meeting of ministers under the leadership of the supreme leader in Kandahar province decided to convene a large gathering of scholars and tasked a commission headed by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar to organize the meeting.

According to the letter, the meeting will be held in Kabul on June 20 and will be attended by well-known scholars and public figures.
