‘Cultural restraint main reason behind closure of girls’ schools’

KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Acting Education Minister Noorullah Munir has said that cultural restraints were the main reason behind the closure of girls’ schools.

During his trip to Khost City, the capital of southeastern Khost province Munir said: “Acting government is not against girls education, there is no religious curb but the only reason is the cultural restraints.”

“In rural areas, people are not against girls’ education but they are sensitive with the girls going out of home and the culture of the people of Afghanistan was very sensitive in this regard.”

He said the Islamic Emirate was trying to convince the masses on this issue and pave the way for the opening of girls’ schools above class sixth.

Referring to the curriculum, he said there was need for reform in the curriculum adding that until the economic problem is resolved the existing curriculum will continue.

He said the past government inked the agreement of 37 million textbooks half of them had been dispatched to the schools and work was underway to dispatch the remaining books.

He said Afghanistan has 20,000 official schools in which 9,000 are of no use, 5,000 have no building and the remaining 4,000 needed rehabilitation.
