6,000 Paktia residents catch diarrhea in past 3 months

GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Continued rainfall and the existence of contaminated water ponds caused 6,000 people to suffer from diarrhea in the southeastern Paktia province in the past three months, an official said on Monday.

Doctor Naseer Ahmad Rahmani, the head of Paktia provincial hospital told Pajhwok Afghan News, 6,000 patients of severe diarrhea visited the hospital for treatment in the last three months.

Rahmani said: “Due to the rainfalls and flash floods, the water storages and ponds got contaminated and the residents infected by severe diarrhea.

The diarrhea cases have jumped to 50 or 70 cases per day in the last ten days, only ten percent of these patients were hospitalized in the hospital, the rest of them were sent back to their homes after medication, Rahmani said.

Dr. Abdul Rahaman told Pajhwok Afghan News, diarrhea disease spreads when the people do not observe hygiene rules, but if such patients are not treated on time it causes death.

Abdul Samad told Pajhwok: “Our patient has been hospitalized in the hospital since two days, there are not many facilities in the hospital, we buy most of the medicines from the city drugstores.”

He asked the government’s support in struggle against diarrhea.

It is worth mentioning that thousands of people inflicted diarrhea in other provinces of the country.
