Campaign to collect, treat drug addicts begins in Nangarhar

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Police and Public Health Department have jointly launched a campaign to round up drug addicts in Jalababad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, and treat them.

On the day one of the campaign, 150 addicts were collected from different parts of the city and taken to the 170-bed hospital for treatment.

Public health director Dr. Amir Muhammad Aftab said that they collected 150 addicts with the help of police and transferred them to the hospital for treatment.

He said the addicts would be treated for 45 days and given advice by experienced doctors so that they do not return to the use of drugs again. He said the hospital has 170 beds, including 20 beds for children.

Dr. Samin Stankzai, the head of the hospital, said the addicts would be hospitalized for 45 days and would be handed over to their families after treatment and would be followed for a year.

Nangarhar Police Spokesman Abdul Basir Zabali said they were working together with health officials in the campaign to collect and treat drug addicts in the city.

The addicts are also happy for being treated. Nik Mohammad, who has been consuming drugs for five years, told Pajhwok that he was addicted to drugs due to lack of job and company of addicts.
