530 trucks with Afghan onions, tomatoes cross into KP

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok):  Afghanistan has exported 530 truckloads of tomatoes and onions to Pakistan via Torkham, officials say.

APP quoted customs officials as saying 222 trucks laden with tomatoes and 308 with onions trucks had crossed into Pakistan over the last four days.

In an effort to stabilise vegetable prices, the Pakistan government recently abolished taxes on onion and tomato imports from Afghanistan and Iran.

Customs officials were working 24/7 to clear the vehicles carrying onions and tomatoes at the Torkham crossing, a representative of the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) said.

Shahid Khan Shinwari, FPCCI convener for Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asian states, noted a fall in onion and tomato rates due to duty-free imports from Afghanistan.
