Faryab: Lefari residents face acute shortage of drinking water

MAIMANA (Pajhwok): About 3,000 families in Lefari valley of Lawlash district of northern Faryab province have been facing acute shortage of drinking water for years and every day they travel several kilometers to fetch water home and meet their need.

The people of this area are farmers and associated with agriculture and raising livestock.

Mohammad Hassan, 30, told Pajhwok Afghan News there were 30 villages and 3,000 families in Lefari area and each family was obliged to wander about six hours a day to fetch water from the valley.

Mohammad Mohsen, another resident of the area, said after dawn men and women of the village went down to the valley with 20-liter jerry cans to fetch water.

Maulvi Ahmad, imam of a mosque, said the people of the area store snow and rain water during the four months of winter and used it for themselves and their livestock but in summer each family was obliged to travel many kilometers to fetch water in jerry cans.

He urged the caretaker government, national and international organizations to provide the minimum water the people of the area needed through pump and solar power system from inside the valley.

Maulvi Amir Mohammad Haqqani, a tribal elder of the area who is currently the spokesman for the governor’s house, said: “In last 20 years, billions of dollars have flowed into Afghanistan but not a single penny was spent on education, health and especially on drinking water in the valley.”

Haqqani urged the central government and institutions to solve the drinking water problem of the people of Lefari area. He said the local authorities were striving to solve the water problem of the residents of the area.
