‘Afghanistan to become region’s roundabout in near future’

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Deputy Prime Minister’s Office for economic affairs on Friday said Afghanistan has gained the position of a bridge between Central Asia and South Asia and would soon become the region’s roundabout.

The statement comes a day after the first train carrying commercial goods related to the joint economic corridor of Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and China arrived in Balkh province.

In a statement the Deputy Prime Minister’s office for economic affairs said geographically Afghanistan has a special value in the region and the country now served as a bridge between Central Asia and South Asia.

Therefore, the statement said, Afghanistan’s economic and trade relations with neighboring and regional countries were not only valuable for Afghanistan, but also important and beneficial for neighboring and regional countries.

Afghanistan’s trade relations with regional countries and the world were at a minimum due to the lack of trade routes (roads and railways), but officials of the Afghanistan Railway Authority had been able to create a new economic corridor between Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and China.

The statement said the new economic corridor would increase the exchange of goods between Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and China and would transfer goods at a low cost and in a short time. Afghanistan would become a roundabout of the region in the near future.
