FM reaffirms commitment to protecting human rights

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan remains firmly committed to protecting human rights, says Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.

He reaffirmed the Islamic Emirate’s commitment at a meeting with United Nations Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Afghanistan Richard Bennett here on Wednesday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi quoted Muttaqi as promising that no one would be allowed to violate human rights in Afghanistan.

“Instead of trading blame, we should cooperate, highlight facts and safeguard progress that has been made in protecting rights.” the minister suggested.

Muttaqi assured the UN official of the Taliban government’s continued efforts to improve the human rights situation in the country.

Balkhi wrote on his Twitter handle that Bennett was in Afghanistan to see everything with his own eyes to report accurately on the current situation.

Separately, Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Salam Hanafi discussed with Bennett security for ethnic minorities, education, women’s rights and media freedom.
