Carbon monoxide leak kills three miners in Samangan

AIBAK (Pajhwok): Three miners have died due to carbon monoxide gas inhalation at a coalmine in Dara Sauf Bala district of northern Samangan province, an official said on Wednesday.

The district chief, Mohammad Nasim Khaibar Shakan, confirmed the death of the three mine workers and said the incident happened in Shabashak coalmine two days ago.

Khaibar Shakan added the victims were from the same locality who arbitrarily entered a restricted coalmine area. The reason of their death was inhalation of carbon monoxide gas and their bodies were recovered from the mine by a rescue team.

He said the victims were poor people who wanted to earn some money. There are four state-owned coalmines in Dahana Toor and Shabashak areas, but the rest of 2,000 tunnel mines are related to local people who work as nonprofessional miners and some 12,000 people work there.

It is worth mentioning the coalmines in Dara Sauf Bala district are the largest deposits in the country and the government earned over three billion afghanis revenue from the mines during the past fiscal year.

Khaibar Shakan said the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum should implement a specific plan for the safety of workers, strengthening tunnels and preventing coal waste.
