Afghan American elected to California State Senate

ATLANTA (Pajhwok): Aisha Wahab has become the first Afghan American to be elected as a member of the California State Senate.

Aisha Wahab wrote on her Twitter handle: “I’m proud to be the FIRST EVER Afghan American and Muslim elected to the State Legislature.”

She added: “We have to believe in ourselves, — power belongs to the people. This success was impossible without people’s cooperation.”

The Afghan Cultural Society head in North California, Nasir Yasini, confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News Aisha Wahab’s election as state senator from the 10th district of California.

Yasini said Aisha was born in America and her parents were from the southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan.

Aisha’s parents lost their lives in a traffic accident some years ago in New York and she was raised as an orphan in California, Yasini recalled.

Aisha is a member of the Democratic Party of President Joe Biden. She was nominated by the party for the state legislature seat.

According to information on her website, after the death of Aisha’s parents, a man named Abdul Wahab raised her while she still lives in the Fremont area of Northern California.

Aisha, holding a master’s degree, had been elected to the City Council in 2018.
