KABUL (Pajhwok): A man convicted of murder was publicly executed in western Farah province on Wednesday in front of onlookers including senior government and court officials, Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said.

In a statement, Mujahid named the person put to death as Tajmir, a resident of Jalwarcha village of Anjil district. Tajmir was convicted of stabbing and killing another man named Mustafa, a resident of Kang village of Pushti Koh district and stealing his motorcycle and a telephone set about five years ago, Mujahid said.

The murderer was identified by the heirs of the victim, who then wrote to the officials of Islamic Emirate and after investigation, the suspect on his own consent, confessed to him guilt, Mujahid added.

The case had been thoroughly and repeatedly examined by a series of courts (Primary, Appeal and Supreme Court) with all procedures and each court issued execution order of the murderer. The file was then referred to the supreme leader of Islamic Emirate, Mawlawi HibatullahAkhundzada for his ratification, Mujahid continued.

Then MawlawiHibatullahAkhundzada revised and discussed the file of the case with other religious scholars and finally the order of execution of the murderer was issued.

Mujahid added: “The Supreme Court was ordered to implement the order of execution today 7th Dec 2022 in the capital city of Farah province”.

Some high level officials of Islamic Emirate including deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, Supreme Court head Mawlawi Abdul Hakim Haqqani, Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, Interior Minister Khalifa Sirajuddin Haqqani, Minister of Vice and Virtue Mawlawi Mohammad Khalid Hanafi, Minister of Justice Abdul Hakim Sharaee, Education Minister Mawlawi Habibullah Agha, spokesperson of Islamic Emirate Zabihullah Mujahid also attended the implementation of the order.

Mujahid did not say how the man was executed —the first confirmed public execution since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.
