KABUL (Pajhwok): The cabinet has tasked the National Statistics and Information Authority (NSIA) with launching a national survey of villages and assessing and preventing damages caused by the Amu River.

The administrative office of the president (AOP) in a statement on Wednesday said the cabinet ordered formation of a delegation of relevant departments’ representatives to assess destructions the Amu River caused to Afghan villages and to consolidate the river’s banks to prevent more destruction.

The statement said the 17th meeting of the Cabinet of the Islamic Emirate headed by Prime Minister Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund ordered the formation of a delegation to prevent more destruction of the banks of Amu River.

According to the Cabinet’s decision, a joint delegation of the ministries of agriculture, livestock and irrigation, borders and tribal affairs, mines and petroleum and water and power and the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority will assess destructions caused by the erosion of the Amu River’s banks and present a draft for prevention of such destruction in future to the upcoming meeting of the cabinet.

The delegation would specify the destroyed, under threat, under sever threat parts of the banks of the river in its draft and would also sketch parts that need reconstruction to prevent such destruction in the future.

The cabinet also tasked NSIA with launching a nationwide survey of the villages of the country and adding all the collected data to its main database in accordance to its principals.

The Amu River has swollen many villages in Balkh and other provinces.
