KABUL (Pajhwok): A number of women in capital Kabul on Thursday staged a protest rally against the caretaker government’s decision to suspend university and higher education for female students.

The Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) on Tuesday suspended women higher education nationwide until next order.

MoHE spokesperson Ziaullah Hashami announced the development by sharing an official statement of the ministry on his twitter handle in this regard.

“All private and public universities of the country are informed that based on the cabinet decision No. 28 women higher education is postponed till next order,” the statement read.

Regarding this issue, a number of Kabul-based women rallied today (Thursday) and chanted slogans: “Education”, “work”, “freedom”, “towards development”, “education for all or not for anyone.”

Zhoolai, one of the protesting women, told Pajhwok Afghan News that they staged protest in reaction to the government’s decision to ban female students from higher education.

She said 30 women, including university students, participated in today’s rally.

According to her, “We began the protest at 9:30 am in the morning from Dehbori square and we wanted to march up to the gate of Kabul university, but the security forces stopped us.”

On Wednesday, female medical faculty students of the university in eastern Nangarhar province boycotted their exams and protested against the Ministry of Higher Education’s decision.
