Hundreds of weapons, military equipment collected in Kunar

ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Hundreds of light and heavy weapons and military equipment have been collected in eastern Kunar province during the past one month as part of an ongoing campaign.

The weapons collection campaign was launched in three districts of Kunar province a month ago by a joint team of the ministries of defense, interior and the Directorate General of Intelligence.

Maulvi Saeedullah Rizwan, the head of the delegation, told reporters here that they collected weapons from ordinary people, former government officials and Taliban members who had arbitrarily taken away the arms following the regime change in Watapur district.

He said: “During the past one month, we collected and registered 636 light and heavy weapons, about one million rounds of ammunition, 25 military equipment and ammunition in Asadabad, the provincial capital, Watapur and Sarkano districts.”

He said since the political change in August 2021, 16,000 different light and heavy weapons had been collected in the eastern provinces and they would be handed over to authorities concerned after a decision of the central government.

Kunar police chief Abdul Haq Haqqani also said that the government was committed to properly using Baitual Mal (the government treasury). He said the weapons collection campaign would continue in cooperation with the masses.
