Pompeo chides Ghani for Doha talks collapse

KABUL (Pajhwok): A former US diplomat has blamed ex-president Ashraf Ghani for the collapse of peace negotiations with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

Then secretary of state Mike Pompeo claimed his country wanted a peaceful transfer of power in Afghanistan, but Ghani refused to support that goal, which could not be achieved.

As CIA director and secretary of state in the Trump administration, Pompeo oversaw the US-Taliban dialogue in Doha. But the talks, beginning in 2018, failed to yield the desired outcome.

In a speech at the University of Chicago, Pompeo denied asking Ghani to stand down as president.

“Well, he would think I did but I didn’t. I was incredibly frustrated with Ghani,” Pakistani newspaper Dawn quoted the erstwhile secretary of state as saying.

About Ghani’s aversion to the Qatar negotiations, the ex-US diplomat said: “It was most unfortunate — he hops on a plane and heads to some place to live a very nice life.”
