SHEBERGHAN (Pajhwok): Over 500,000 school textbooks have reached northern Jawzjan province from Kabul and nearly 300,000 more will also reached soon, an official said on Wednesday.

Jawzjan education director Maulvi Mohammad Tahir, said the shortage of text books was a huge issue last year but the arrival of new textbook will help resolve the problems in the coming education year.

Recently more than 513000 books funded by the UN International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) transported from Kabul to Sheberghan, capital of the province, and it solved books problem to some extent, he assured.

According to him: “The Ministry of Education had promised 876,675 textbooks to Jawzjan education directorate. Out of them 513,215 books have arrived and the remaining 363,460 ones will be delivered in the next phase. They will solve students’ textbooks issue”.

The textbooks were for 1st -12th grade students which would be distributed rapidly, he said.

Sadruddin Bashardost, principle of one of the schools in Jawzjan, said lack of books had been one of the huge problems for the last ten years.

He noted, distribution of new books would encourage students to learn their lessons well and attend classes on time.

Mohammad Nadir, an 11th grade student in one of central high schools, said:” 13 books are taught in grade 11 and we were given only three of them and the rest of them were not available.”

Expressing happiness with arrival of the books, he said,” last year we experience many difficulties studying our lessons and currently I am happy with the provision of new books.”

He hoped they would swiftly obtain the textbooks.
