Uzbekistan Railways halts transportation to Afghanistan

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Uzbekistan Railways on Wednesday suspended goods transportation to Afghanistan, Interfax reported.

The suspension was linked to Afghanistan’s failure to honour its commitment to completing phased technical work by February 1.

At talks last month in Termez, Afghan officials had assured their Uzbek interlocutors of discharging their technical work obligations

Blaming Kabul for its inability to implement the agreed measures in time, the Uzbekistan Railways said: “Railroad transportation to Afghanistan will be suspended from February 1.”

In order to prevent delays in delivering essential goods, Uzbekistan promised practical assistance in trucking cargo to Afghanistan.

The Uzbekistan Railways constructed the 75-kilometere Hairatan – Mazar-i-Sharif railroad at a cost of $129 million 13 years ago.
