Drug addicts’ collection campaign kicks off in Nangarhar

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): At least 200 drug addicts were rounded up on the first day of a campaign kicked off in eastern Nangarhar province on Wednesday, an official said.

Naqibullah Rahimi, a spokesman for the Public Health Department, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the drug addicts’ collection and treatment campaign was launched  in cooperation with the Anti-narcotics Department.

He said 200 drug addicts were collected on the first day of the campaign from different areas of Jalalabad and sent to a 170-bed rehabilitation center.

Rahimi added the addicts would be kept in the facility for 40 days in order to receive full treatment before being reunited with families.

During this period, the addicts will be given medicines, food and other necessary items for free and they will be treated in a standard manner, he added.

The Islamic Emirate has started efforts to collect and treat drug addicts and has so far collected thousands of addicts in various parts of the country, especially Kabul, for treatment.
