KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations has assured Afghan media and journalists of support, asking the caretaker government to reverse bans on women workers.
Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan Roza Otunbayeva and UNESCO Representative Patricia McPhillips renewed the world body’s support to Afghan media.
According to UNAMA, the UN officials visited Radio Salam Watandar on World Radio Day, devoted to the importance of the medium in conflict prevention and peace-building.
Otunbayeva hoped Afghan radio stations would continue to play a role in promoting peace and healthy discourse to prevent conflicts and foster amity. “The UN supports media freedom and access to information,” commented the UNESCO representative.
Om the ban on female NGO workers, Otunbayeva said: “I call on the de facto authorities to reverse these restrictions.”
