34th anniversary of Soviet forces withdrawal celebrated

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan on Wednesday announced a public holiday to celebrate the 34th anniversary of withdrawal of former Soviet Union forces from the country.

Back in 1979, around 100,000 Soviet Union forces invaded Afghanistan from land and aerial routes and captured most areas in the country.

Will equipped and strong Soviet forces faced an unprecedented resistance from the people of Afghanistan and lost nearly 150,000 forces in the nearly nine year conflict.

It was February 15, 1989 when BBC announced the implementation of Geneva Accord on the bases of which the last Soviet troops left Afghanistan at 11:55 am via Friendship Bridge.
