West reaffirms support for Afghan women & girls

KABUL (Pajhwok): US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West has reaffirmed Washington’s support for Afghan women, men, girls and boys.

On Wednesday, West tweeted: “Today, International Women’s Day, we recognise the extraordinary courage of Afghan women and girls in the face of unspeakable restrictions on their rights – to work, to be educated, to access vital aid – imposed by the Taliban.”

The diplomat reiterated support for Afghan women, men girls and boys to see half of their country return to school, work and deliver aid in every sector.

“I am thinking of the good advice I’ve gotten from Afghan women doctors, journalists, aid workers, governors and engineers – leaders with vision and backbone – to stand our ground in defence of women’s role in Afghan society.”

The Islamic Emirate has repeatedly said the work and education bans on girls and women are temporary and a solution will be found in light of Islamic guidelines.

On Wednesday, Deputy Prime Minister in political affairs, Maulvi Abdul Kabir, congratulated Muslim women, including those of Afghanistan.

He said throughout the Islamic history, women, especially Afghan women, had played an effective role in various battles.

Kabir said Islam treated men and women with dignity — both integral parts of society. Islam respected women and calls for treating them with justice, added.
