ATLANTA (Pajhwok): The UN Security Council (UNSC) has extended the operation of its UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) mandate till March 17, 2024.

A resolution 2678 in this regard was unanimously adopted to extend the mandate of the UNAMA for another year, the UN body said on its Twitter handle.
The Council also adopted a separate resolution, requesting an independent assessment with forward-looking recommendations from UN chief Antonio Guterres by 17 Nov. for an “integrated and coherent approach” to address challenges in Afghanistan.

All 15 members approved the two motions, written by the UAE and Japan, to continue the UNAMA mission and to direct Secretary General Antonio Guterres to look into the way ahead in the Taliban-governed country.

The resolution calls on all relevant Afghan political actors and stakeholders, as well as international actors to coordinate with the mission in the implementation of its mandate and to ensure the safety, security and freedom of movement of the UN and associated personnel throughout the country.

UK’s envoy to United Nation says the mandate sent a clear message that the international community will not abandon Afghan women and girls as the Taliban continues to run the country.

Afghanistan’s UN representative Naseer Ahmed Faiq praised the vote, which he said reflected a “new degree of unity and consensus” on the Security Council.

He added that the move ensured a “more responsive” UN that will address the many challenges on the ground facing an Afghanistan under Taliban rule.
